Moolavar is Shri.Thajayali Narasimhar and thayar is Thanjai Nayaki. Thanjakan a raakshasa in the form of an elephant was terrorising people here. Lord in Narasimha avatara killed this raakshasa and people who were freed from his terror built this temple for Lord. The name of the place Thanjavore is only from this legend.
Thirumangai Azhwar, Bhootataazhwar and Nammaazhwar have sung Mangalaasaasanams.
