38. Thirunangur - 9 - Thiru Parthanpalli

Thiru Parthanpalli temple is near Thiruvenkadu (Budhan stala) 15 kms from Sirkazhi. This temple dates back to the period of Mahabharata, where Arjuna was initiated of a Gnaana from Lord Parthasarathy.

When Arjuna on a long tour reached this place, was thirsty and could not find water any where near. He then reached Sage Agasthiya's ashrama and asked for water. To their surprise his kamandala was also dry. Knowing fully well that it was Lord Krishna's leela and asked Arjuna to pray for mercy of him. Arjuna prayed and Lord Krishna appeared. He gave Arjuna a sword and asked him to strike the ground with it and as he did so, water appeared from it creating a pool. This is to the south of the temple and is known as "Katka Pushkarini". In this temple Arjuna is also seen with a sword.

Lord Parthasarathy initiated the Gnaana of self to him to know who he really was and what his real powers were. Since Arjuna was a student here this place is known as Parthanpalli.
